CBCL wins ACWWA Award for City of Fredericton Flood Risk Profile

CBCL, in collaboration with the City of Fredericton, has been awarded the Atlantic Canada Water & Wastewater Association (ACWWA) Project of the Year – Large Utility for its work on the City of Fredericton City-Wide Flood Risk Profile.

Completing a multi-year initiative, the City-Wide Flood Risk Profile is the first flood risk assessment of its kind in Atlantic Canada. CBCL partnered with the City of Fredericton to develop a cutting-edge model that evaluates flood risks across the city’s stormwater, riverine, and sanitary sewer systems. The work was modeled after an initiative by the City of Ottawa who was an advisor on the project.

Fredericton’s new flood risk profile helps the city understand where and how flooding could impact homes, roads, hospitals, and essential services. As a tool for planning, protecting, and preparing residents and infrastructure from flooding, this will allow Fredericton to make informed decisions on current and future developments.

This project analyzed over 400km of storm sewer pipes and 3,000+ manholes in a City-wide 2D model, with building-level flood hazard ratings created for every property in Fredericton. Additionally, a city-wide sanitary sewer model was created to assess sewer capacity and flood risk potential. This type of modelling will help with visualizing and planning for flood risks stemming from storm sewer, overland runoff, sanitary sewer surcharges, and riverine flooding.

CBCL is grateful to be involved in forward-thinking approaches to climate resilience.
