TransAqua Wastewater Heat Recovery Project Receives ACWWA Project of the Year Award
CBCL is proud to celebrate the TransAqua Wastewater Treatment Facility Wastewater Heat Recovery Project, which was recognized with the Atlantic Canada Water & Wastewater Association (ACWWA) Project of the Year Award in the Medium category. The award recognizes innovative projects that deliver meaningful benefits to communities while advancing sustainability within the water sector.
Working alongside TransAqua, CBCL developed an innovative solution to recover heat from treated wastewater and repurpose it as a renewable energy source. Rather than allowing that energy to go to waste, the system captures and reuses it to help heat the facility, reducing overall energy consumption and supporting more sustainable operations.
The project was designed to lower energy use, reduce peak electrical demand, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions at the wastewater treatment plant. Through detailed engineering analysis, the team evaluated energy savings, project costs, available incentive programs, and long-term operational benefits to create a practical and effective path forward.
By transforming a waste stream into a valuable energy resource, the project demonstrates how innovative infrastructure solutions can improve operational efficiency while supporting environmental stewardship and climate action goals. Recognition as ACWWA’s Medium Project of the Year highlights the project’s technical excellence, forward-thinking approach, and lasting contribution to a more sustainable future for Atlantic Canada’s water sector.
