2024 Project Profile: Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port

CBCL started the design development phase of the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port Project in 2024. The project involves the construction of a deep sea port to service and support the arctic fishing fleet from Nunavut. With construction expected to start in 2026, this project will provide a significant investment in Nunavut.

The development of the Qikiqtarjuaq Deep Sea Port is a transformative project for Nunavut, which boasts a coastline longer than all four Atlantic provinces combined. This port will be the first to service the offshore high Arctic fishery, allowing the fleet to offload their catch within the territory rather than overseas. This initiative is expected to create local jobs, enhance economic growth, and support regional development by attracting related industries and services, ultimately boosting Nunavut’s self-sufficiency and economic resilience.

CBCL, as the prime consultant, is leading a team of eight companies. Over the past year, CBCL employees have conducted three community consultations and completed aquatic and terrestrial biology field programs. Our geotechnical subconsultant executed an on-ice program, flying a drill rig into Qikiqtarjuaq in April with the drilling program taking place on the frozen ocean surface. Additionally, our subconsultants have carried out topographic and bathymetric surveys, an archaeological impact assessment, and a quarry geotechnical field program. CBCL aims to finalize the construction documents by 2025.
